Chris Pratt to Ellen Page: Maybe My Church is Anti-Gay, But I'M Not!

Last week, Ellen Page called out Chris Pratt for attending Zoe Church, which is modeled after an infamously anti-LGBTQ megachurch.

No one wants to believe that Chris is homophobic. People have loved him for a long time.

Now, he’s responding to her words, but his reply isn’t going over well with everyone. Take a look:

“It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which ‘hates a certain group of people,'” Chris begins on his Instagram Story.

“And,” he continues. “Is ‘infamously anti –LGBTQ.'”

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Chris claims.

He then writes: “I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone.”

We hope that we do not have to explain that opening church doors is not the same thing as accepting or embracing the whole of a person.

But Chris had more to say. …

Chris Pratt defensive Instagram Story

“Despite what the Bible says about divorce,” Chris writes.

He continues: “my church community was there for me every step of the way.”

That note did not go over well on social media, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Chris says that his church was “never judging, just gracefully accompanying me on my walk.”

“They helped me tremendously offering love and support,” he notes.

“It is what I have seen them do for others on countless occasions regardless of sexual orientation, race, or gender,” Chris affirms.

“My faith is important to me,” Chris writes.

That has always been very clear.

“But,” he says. “No church defines me or my life and I am not spokesman for any church or any group of people.”

“My values define who I am,” he affirms. “We need less hate in this world, not more.”

“I am a man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want free from the judgment of their fellow man,” he concludes.

Hey, that sounds good!

Chris then has a more explicitly religious message.

“This is what guides me in my life,” Chris says. “He is a God of Love, Acceptance and Forgiveness.”

“Hate has no place in my or this world,” he emphasizes.

He then quotes: “Jesus said, ‘I give you a new command, love one another.'”

Chris Pratt Puckers Up

A quick note: divorce was very much a thing in the Old Testament.

Specifically, biblically speaking, the Law of Moses absolutely allows for divorce under various circumstances.

It was in the New Testament that divorce became more frowned upon

Regardless, the vast majority of Christian communities are accepting of divorce as a part of life.

(Historically speaking, religions that do not adapt with the times face schisms or extinction)

Still, it rubbed many the wrong way that Chris seemed to compare accepting a divorced celebrity with accepting LGBTQ+ folks.

The latter are sometimes murdered simply for existing.

Still, though he could have spelled it out a bit more explicitly, it looks like Chris is affirming his support for the LGBTQ+ community.

He was trying to phrase things more broadly, but his meaning seems clear.

A lot of people understand that people may attend religious institutions with whom they do not agree on issues of human rights or politics.

At the same time … Chris did sound a little defensive of his church.

He’s not the first celebrity with hordes of LGBTQ+ fans who has given people pause with his choice in which church to attend.

It’s not unreasonable for people to expect that his church affiliation reflects his values — or at least his priorities.

But we can all agree that Chris’ response to this could have been much worse.
